A quick and thorough examination of the oral cavity can easily done by any health care professional.

Dr. Reinhold Voll, MD, a German medical doctor, acupuncturist and founder of the EAV (Electro Acupuncture by Voll) back in the 1940′s was once quoted as saying, “80% of all illness is related entirely or partially to problems in the mouth.” Accurate statement or not, I believe from my own personal research and clinical experiences that it appears Dr. Voll knew what he was talking about.

The following suggestions are questions you might ask your patients and notes that should be documented during a simple dental exam:

Questions:

1. Is there anything that is hurting in your mouth at the present time?

   If your patient says yes, see if they can pinpoint the exact tooth that’s involved. Even without X-rays, you might suspect an infection that could be causing ill effects to other parts of the body.

2. Do you ever notice your gums bleed when brushing or flossing your teeth?

   If yes, some form of periodontal disease is present. Remember that healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding gums will create a bacteremia that can introduce harmful bacteria into the bloodstream. Systemic complications may result from this seemingly innocent condition.

3. Do you ever have a metallic taste in your mouth?

   If yes, the galvanic currents (the metal materials) in their mouth may be considerably higher than normal. Common symptoms are burning or tingling sensation of the tongue, sleep deprivation, irritability, increased salivation. This usually can be eliminated by removing the metal interferences caused by their dental restorations.

4. Do you have any root canals in your mouth?

   If yes, how many and ask them how long they’ve had them. See if they can show you which teeth have the root canals. Check your Tooth/Organ Chart for any other organ systems that might be connected with specific meridian pathways. The older the root canals, the greater are the chances for failures to occur; i.e., low-grade infections can persist for years without ever being detected. Clinical Observations:

1. How much dental work has been done in your patent’s mouth?
2. How many mercury fillings are in the mouth?
3. How many teeth are missing?
4. Halitosis? Indication of digestive problems.
5. pH reading. Normal should be approx. 7.0. Below 6.0 are usually signs of acidosis.
6. How much calculus do you see on the teeth?
7. Gingival tissue: should be light pink with no signs of irritation, redness or puffiness.
8. Tongue: should be moist, light pink and slightly rounded at the tip.

In less than 2 minutes, you’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s going on in your patient’s mouth. If there are some dental issues that you believe need to be addressed, try to find a dentist (biological if possible) who will be sensitive to the needs of your patients and that will help support and compliment the work that you’re providing for them as well.

The more dental work performed on your patients and the more teeth that are missing may suggest a history of chronic exposure to sugars and a lack of proper dental hygiene (a localized factor) OR these problems could be a result of systemic complications due to a weaken immune system, toxic exposure to heavy metals and/or dysbiosis.

Whatever the case may be, it just seems imperative that a “simple,” dental examination should always be part of a complete health evaluation. All your patients will certainly appreciate your thoroughness.

In closing, I would like to say that my dental career has certainly been an interesting journey for me up to this point in my life. The paradigm shift has already taken place for me in dentistry, and it’s effected me both personally and professionally. I do believe that using a biological approach to care for our dental patients can and will make a difference in their overall health and wellness. Oral disease begins with a build up of plaque and tartar in your pet’s mouth. Without proper preventive and therapeutic care, plaque and tartar buildup leads to periodontal disease, which manifests in red and/or swollen and tender gums, bad breath, and bleeding. When the gums are swollen, they can be painful – a good rule of thumb is that if it looks like it might be painful, it probably is. Pets are masters at masking pain – when in doubt, assume that your pet is experiencing at least some discomfort.

The inflammation and infection associated with periodontal disease can lead to damage to other organs such as the heart, kidney and liver, and lead to other serious health problems. Dental disease can also be an indicator of immune system disorders, particularly in cats.

Common indicators of oral disease in dogs include bad breath, a change in eating or chewing habits, pawing at the face or mouth and depression. If you notice any of these, don’t wait until your dog’s next annual check up, take him to the veterinarian for a thorough exam.

A dog’s teeth can be a good indication of overall health. But as important as good dental hygiene is for dogs, many dog owners overlook it. Just like in humans, it’s important to practice routine oral maintenance on your dog. Not only can it help its teeth stay healthy now, but it can also protect against more serious issues later.

If bacteria are allowed to grow in a dog’s mouth, plaque can accumulate on the teeth. If it’s not addressed, it can escalate to more serious concerns. Since a dog’s mouth is used to play and eat, among other things, it’s important to keep it in top shape. The best way to do this is through maintenance and prevention.

Believe it or not, most dogs three years of age and older have some form of gum disease. If a dog’s teeth are neglected, plaque can form, setting the stage for advanced oral diseases. Plaque can bind with minerals in a dog’s saliva and create tartar, which attaches to the teeth and can cause irritation to the gums, or gingivitis. Left untreated, tartar can get under the gum line and dissolve the bones that hold the teeth in place, causing the teeth to become loose and possibly fall out. Periodontal disease, as it’s called, is treatable, but once your dog’s teeth fall out, there’s little to be done. The best line of defense is regular brushing and check-ups.

Home care is important, but it’s also critical to have your dog’s teeth examined regularly by a professional. A simple visual exam can be done in an office visit, but more comprehensive care, such as x-rays and tartar removal, has to be done while the dog is under sedation. It’s safer for both the dog and the medical staff, and it gives the vet an opportunity to do a more thorough exam. Some vets even specialize in dental care for dogs, so it’s worthwhile to investigate your options.

It may take time before your dog is comfortable having its teeth cleaned. If you use a toothbrush, be sure to get your pet familiar with it, so he’s more likely to allow you to use it. A toothbrush allows you to reach teeth more effectively, but a finger brush may be easier to maneuver. Just be sure it fits well, so it won’t fall off in your dog’s mouth. Find a toothpaste formulated for dogs. Human toothpaste is made to be spit out, while a dog will swallow it, so don’t use human products, just to be on the safe side. Many dog toothpastes have added flavors that are attractive to dogs, such as beef, chicken or vanilla.

While brushing your dog’s teeth, take this opportunity to examine its mouth for any signs of disease. Bad breath (that which is out of the ordinary for your dog), yellowing or crust at the gum line, swelling, or pain when you touch your dog’s gums should be noted. These could be signs of infection and should be addressed immediately. Not doing so could result in tooth loss for your dog.

Another important consideration for healthy teeth is your dog’s toys. Excessive chewing on hard surfaces can lead to a dog’s teeth being damaged. If this occurs, bacteria can get into the tooth and cause infection. Bones can splinter and lodge between teeth, rocks can break teeth and toys can cause bleeding gums if a dog chews too aggressively. Be sure to monitor your dog during play time, and only give it toys that are appropriate for your pet’s size and activity level.

Your dog’s food and treats can be a good tool for treating plaque. Dry food can help attack plaque, while there are dog treats on the market that are especially formulated to address the issue of plaque and oral care.
